THRISSUR: Additional District Magistrate P.M. Francis on Tuesday said the district administration would take further action on Banerji Club recovery only after ascertaining the views of the Advocate-General. The Banerji Club, one of the oldest clubs in the district, was sealed by revenue officials on Monday morning as part of the State-wide anti-encroachment drive.
High Court order
Later, the Kerala High Court directed the district administration to return the club immediately to its office-bearers. The court asked revenue officials to carry out eviction proceedings a week after disposing the revision petition filed before the District Collector by office-bearers of the club.
AIYF protest
Activists of the All-India Youth Federation took out a march in protest against the order to hand over the club to its office-bearers. The protesters maintained that the land used by the club was public property. The activists leapt over the gate and the wall into the compound of the club. An altercation between the police and activists ensued. The protest march was inaugurated by V.S. Sunil Kumar, MLA.
