ABVP: Centre promoting privatisation of education

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Accusing the ruling United Progressive Alliance at the Centre of encouraging "commercialisation" of education, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has said that the Centre's policies and decisions on educational issues are against the interests of the common man.

Discussing the highlights of ABVP's national executive committee meeting that was held from May 28 to 31 at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, its vice-president Payal Mago said the Centre's policies promote privatisation of education and appeasement of minorities for vote-bank politics.

The national executive committee passed five resolutions on issues related to national interest, including one on the present educational scenario, she informed.

The resolution on education said: "On one hand, the Government expenditure on education is declining while on the other it has failed to make any earnest effort to control self-financing/unaided educational institutions for preventing exploitation of students."

About the recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission the resolution said the suggestions were of very "generic" nature and failed to take note of the ground realities.

"The Commission has failed to take the views of educationists, teachers' organisations and students' organisations. Only a few persons were randomly selected for discussion. There were differences of opinion within the Commission," it alleged.

The student organisation also accused the Government of following a policy of appeasement of minorities in the field of education.

"We are in favour of providing quota to Other Backward Classes but reservations should be extended to minority institutions also as they are funded by the Government," Dr. Mago said.

The national executive committee also opposed introduction of sex education in schools.
