In the past two years, 40,000 saplings have been planted at Garhi Mandu. With the survival rate being 85 per cent, the Government plans to plant one lakh saplings this year.
According to a Delhi Government spokesperson, the Government has decided to develop nine new city forests with the aim of bringing 33 per cent of the geographical area under forest cover as envisaged in the National Forest Policy, 1988.
The new city forests would be developed at Issapur (66.25 hectares), Rewla Khanpur (22.85 hectares), Kharkari Jatmal (50 hectares), Sultanpur Dabas (24.76 hectares), Auchandi (0.5 hectare), Mungeshpur (13.5 hectares), Qutab Garh (27.77 hectares), Hindon cut Ghazipur (5 hectares) and Harewali (24.8 hectares).
Ms. Dikshit also inspected the "Clean Yamuna Drive" at Sur Ghat near the Wazirabad bridge.
The Chief Minister told media persons that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has constituted an authority for cleaning and beautification of the Yamuna. Also, the Delhi Jal Board would soon implement its scheme for installing interceptors on all the 19 drains that fall into the river.
