DJB breather for illegal colonies

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Congress Member of Parliament from Outer Delhi, Sajjan Kumar, has said that the Delhi Jal Board would not be collecting development charges from residents of unauthorised colonies while laying water pipelines in their areas.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Kumar said he along with other leaders had met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and apprised her of the difficulties being faced by residents of unauthorised colonies while collecting money to pay towards development charges.

The Jal Board had said that 25 per cent of the development charges would have to be paid in advance for laying the pipelines. With collection being difficult, the task of laying water pipelines gets delayed, Mr. Kumar said.

"Ms. Dikshit has now directed the DJB to collect development charges from the residents at the time of giving them water connections," said Mr. Kumar.

The Congress MP also praised the Delhi Government for working out an arrangement with the Bhakra-Beas Management Board for release of 20 million gallons per day (MGD) of additional water for the Nangloi water treatment plant.

The Management Board had been supplying only 20 MGD of water for the Nangloi plant, though it had a capacity for 40 MGD, on the ground that the canal passing through Haryana did not have the capacity to carry that much water.

However, the Delhi Government got a survey done by the Central Water Commission that concluded that the canal had the capacity to carry 40 MGD of water.

This would provide the much-needed relief to the people of West Delhi, particularly the residents of villages and authorised and unauthorised colonies, said Mr. Kumar.
