Plan to train school dropouts

HYDERABAD: A massive programme has been chalked out to train school dropouts remaining idle across villages, in various trades in ITIs of the State for being absorbed in industries and other sectors.

To start with, training will be offered to 2.5 lakh such youths in masonry, carpentry, electrical-wiring etc. The training, which will be commenced from July last week, will last for 6 to 8 months in each trade. It has been found that most rural youths dropped out at the stage of Class VI to X.

A decision to give a major thrust to the employment creation programme in line with the Congress election promise to provide 1 million jobs, was taken by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekghara Reddy at a meeting held here on Tuesday.

Manpower shortage

Labour & Employment Minister G. Vinod and Technical Education Minister R. Chenga Reddy told reporters later that Rs. 20 crores would be released immediately towards the programme.

An encouraging aspect of the programme was that industries, following talks with the Government, had come forward to absorb as many youths as possible after training. V. L. N. Reddy, president, Federation of Andhra Pradesh Small Industries Association and MD, Sri Venkatewara Industries, who attended the meeting, said industries faced shortage of skilled workers and other forms of manpower.
