Staff Correspondent

Minister says
  • Kumaraswamy will ensure smooth transfer of power
  • Experts contemplating ban on horse racing

MAKING A POINT: Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda addressing presspersons in Hassan on Tuesday.

HASSAN: Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda said the results of the Ullala byelection in which the Congress won the seat was not an indication of the performance of the coalition Government in Karnataka.

The Minister was in Hassan to participate in the funeral of district Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Dipak Rangaswamy who died on Tuesday morning.

Mr. Ramachandra Gowda said the present Janata Dal (Secular)-BJP coalition Government in the State was doing well but the Opposition was not strong.

The Minister said Finance Minister and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa would become Chief Minister on October 3. They had full faith in Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in a smooth transfer of power to the BJP. He said the era for lotteries was over.

Now legal experts were considering banning horse racing in the State.

The Minister said the Government was thinking of starting a four-year B.Sc. course so that after completion of the course, graduates could be appointed as science teachers in high schools. He said science and technology was losing importance as students now preferred to take up IT and bio-tech courses.

    Popularise science

To popularise science, this move was necessary. "We have discussed this matter with the Vice-Chancellors of universities," he added.

The Minister said that a Science Park would be developed in Bangalore from this year while two regional science centres would be set up in Dharwad and Mangalore.
