HYDERABAD: The Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) consisting of the newly elected teacher MLCs has suggested to the Government to launch `vidya yagnam', on the lines of `jalayagnam', to strengthen the field of education by allocating huge funds. At a press conference here on Tuesday, Chukka Ramaiah, PDF chairman, D. Rami Reddy, floor leader, M. V. S. Sarma, deputy floor leader, and K. Nageshwar, member, said focussed attention was needed to protect Government schools, besides tackling lecturers' problems. They wanted Government institutions from primary school to college-level strengthened to meet the education needs of weaker sections who depended on the public sector. With the corporate institutions treating education as a business proposition, only the affluent could afford education. Stating that the PDF would support the `vidya yagnam' programme, they suggested to the Government to consult all concerned to hold meetings with Ministers concerned to implement it. Among the steps they suggested was opening of Government degree/junior colleges in each mandal offering latest courses, setting up of `centre for excellence' junior colleges, immediate approval of unified service rules by the President and increasing the mess charges in social welfare hostels. The leaders warned the Government that if it failed to find solutions to problems, the PDF would organise phased agitations in July-August by teachers' organisations. Dr. Nageshwar demanded immediate opening of a Government degree college in Ranga Reddy district, which would help the poor gain access to higher education.
