HYDERABAD: Only if every man, woman and child take it upon themselves to plant a sapling each and only when plastic is banned totally can people win the war against pollution and save the environment, said Minister for Forests and Environment S. Vijayarama Rao at a World Environment Day programme. After releasing a bulletin and poster at a function organised by the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), he said a silent revolution was required to strengthen the hands of the 8,400-odd `Vana Samrakshana Samithis' (Forest Protection Committees) under the Joint Forest Management programme.
Gore's film
An edited version of former US Vice-President, Al Gore's film, `An inconvenient truth' was played at the function. On the film's message of countering global warming, the Minister regretted that the Polar bear was becoming extinct for the simple reason that the snow in the Arctic and Antarctic regions were melting, thanks to increasing temperatures. "Animals are becoming extinct and very soon human beings will cease to exist," he said. M. Sashidhar Reddy, MLA and Member, National Disaster Management Authority, said the need of the hour was to "Think Globally, Act Locally". Environmental degradation was a global problem for which every nation needed to come together, he said.
Awards presented
Later, APPCB's Cleaner Production (CP) awards for 2006 were given away to ITC Limited (Paperboards & Speciality Papers division), Bhadrachalam, KCP Ltd, Cement Production Unit, Macherla, Asian Peroxides Ltd, Sullurpet, Ultra Tech Cement Company Ltd, Tadipatri, Chaitanya Chemicals, Kadapa and Annapura Cashew Industries, Mandasa, Srikakulam district. Earlier, Incharge Member-Secretary, APPCB, R. Sobha welcomed the gathering and outlined the board's initiatives in spreading awareness.
