A musical conference of understanding

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: At a time when some musicians and their followers continue to be sharply divided between the two traditions of Hindustani and Carnatic music, it is heartening that some organisations that follow one tradition are making efforts to help people understand and appreciate the other.

In one such effort, Bangalore Gayana Samaja has chosen a Hindustani-music performer as the president of its conference, which is mainly dedicated to the Carnatic tradition. Sarod maestro Rajeev Taranath will preside over the 39th Music Conference of the samaja from August 5 to 12. A meeting of the samaja unanimously selected Pt. Taranath as president of the conference. He is the fourth Hindustani musician to preside over the event. He will be conferred with the title "Sangeetha Kalaratna" on the last day of the conference.

The conference will have expert sessions from August 6 to 11. Music concerts will also be held daily at 6 p.m.
