Haryana releases water for Delhi

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: With Haryana relenting and releasing more water for Delhi, the water crisis in the Capital has been resolved to some extent. But unwilling to let go of the "lapse" on Haryana's part, the Delhi Jal Board has taken up the issue with the Upper Yamuna River Board.

Stop recurrence

The water utility has written to the UYRB to look into the matter as it wants to leave no scope for recurrence of the incident in future.

"We have already written to the UYRB chairperson to look into the lapse. A situation like this should never recur. Drinking water always gets priority over other purposes including irrigation," said DJB Chief Executive Officer Arun Mathur.

Pointing out that the situation in the city on Tuesday had vastly improved, Mr. Mathur said the production of water at Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants, which had dipped in the past few days, had increased.

"We are keeping an eye on the situation. The water level that had dipped to 672.5 feet at the Wazirabad pond has increased and we are hopeful that late tonight the situation will return to normal," he said.

Following intervention of the UYRB, Haryana had released about 800 cusecs of water on Monday night.

"The release of additional water has helped improve the water production, but we have to gradually scale-up production because the levels at Wazirabad might dip again. Both at Chandrawal and Wazirabad the production is up to 80 to 90 per cent," the DJB CEO said. The dip in the pond level at Wazirabad had led to a water crisis with the city facing a shortfall of about 200 cusecs. Several parts of Delhi including the VIP areas under the jurisdiction of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) were hit by water scarcity.
