KOCHI: Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar said here on Tuesday that common man should be given the right over natural resources. She was speaking at a seminar on environment and society, organised by Nature Life Hospital here. She said that a collective effort should be made to protect natural resources in the country. Ms. Patkar also called for a people's movement to resist attempts being made to destroy the ecosystem. Social critic Sukumar Azhikode urged the judiciary to punish people encroaching on rivers, lakes and other natural resources in the State. In his inaugural address at the seminar, Mr. Azhikode said that indiscriminate encroachment had affected the ecosystem here. Referring to the legal measures available for checking encroachment, Mr. Azhikode said that the authorities had not been able to implement the provisions effectively. He came down heavily on the State Pollution Control Board for failing to act against those polluting the natural resources. Mr. Azhikode suggested stringent action against those dumping domestic waste in public places.
