Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the secretary, Kochi Corporation, to appear in person on June 11 before the court to explain the reasons for the Corporation's failure to take steps to evict the encroachers on Perandoor canal. The Bench issued the directive when a contempt of court petition filed by the Institute of Social Welfare came up. The petitioner pointed out that the secretary had undertaken that all encroachments on the canal would be removed. . The court had also directed the police to render necessary assistance for evicting the encroachments. Despite the directive, the Corporation had not taken any step to evict the encroachers, the petitioner pointed out.
Directive issued
Acting on another petition, the Bench directed the Corporation secretary to file an affidavit regarding the progress of the construction of the Brahmapuram plant and the steps taken to remove solid waste from the city. The petition was filed by Dijo Kappan of the Centre for Consumer Education, Pala.
