Role for women in crime prevention

Staff Reporter

Action plan drawn up

Kochi: The city police are trying to equip women to play their part in preventing and fighting crime. As another phase of community policing, the force has almost completed charting an action plan to bring women also into the fold.

"We are preparing short presentations on nearly 30 types of cheating and duping methods often tried on women," said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

The project, titled "Stree Suraksha Sandesam" , will be formally announced at the next meeting of the Police Residents Association Initiative in District Ernakulam (PRIDE) to be held on second Saturdays of every month.

The drive will be coordinated by the women's cell, and N.A. Mary, Circle Inspector, women's cell, will be the chief resource person.

The project is being implemented in association with residents' associations in the city and Kudumbasree members.

"This is going to be a continuous programme. We have assistance from the District Crime Records Bureau in adding to the themes handled in the project," he said.

The core team will display the short presentations, which include simulated situations acted out by the police personnel, to drive home messages of safety and crime prevention more effectively.

The larger goal of the project is to evolve women as a pool of informants.

"Women have not really come forward to fight crime, despite many sessions. We are now concentrating on instilling courage in them and to ensure that they are not harassed for giving information about anti-social activities in the neighbourhood," said P.K. Gopalakrishnan, general secretary, Ernakulam District Residents Association Apex Council.
