Thiruvananthapuram: The Health Department on Tuesday launched a week-long total sanitation drive as part of efforts to encourage environmental hygiene to keep infectious diseases in check. The formal inauguration of the programme was held along with World Environment Day observation at Cotton Hill Girls High School. The district health administration held a meeting of its field staff to review fever surveillance and vector control activities. An amount of Rs.5,000 has been allotted to the ward-level sanitation committees for undertaking awareness classes on infectious diseases and for source reduction activities. Health melas are being planned in all Assembly constituencies.
