KTDC to brand Yatri Nivas and motels

S. Anil Radhakrishnan

  • Yatri Nivas, motels to sport new look
  • Effort to clear misconception among tourists

Thiruvananthapuram: Taking a cue from the leading hotel chains, the State-owned Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) is to brand the motels and Yatri Nivas with the smart traveller in mind.

The aim would be to ensure comfort and convenience and offer premium service to the guests who walk in, a top official of the KTDC told The Hindu . Besides, the branding would help avoid the misconception prevailing among the tourists that Yatri Nivas and motels of the KTDC were cheap and should be avoided. Limited menu, modern facilities including Wi-Fi Internet connectivity, better ambience, affordable room rates within the range of Rs.1,000 and linkage to tourist resorts are what awaits the tourists.

In the case of motels, the authorities were planning to introduce a menu with emphasis on Kerala cuisine. The chairs in the motels would be replaced and the staff would be provided a new uniform. The ambience in the interior of the motel, Araam, would reflect Kerala.

The eight units of Yatri Nivas are located in Kannur, Thrissur, Mannarkad, Guruvayur Alappuzha, Kollam, Changanacherry and Peeremedu. In addition to the eight units, the corporation would set up Yatri Nivas at Tirunelli, Kondotty and Kalady.

The motels of the KTDC function in Kannur, Vadakara, Kuttipuram, Errimayoor, Athirapally, Vaikom, Kottarakara, Alappuzha, Kayamkulam, Palaruvi, Adoor and Pallathuruthi. The motel at Punalur would start functioning in a couple of weeks. The branding of Yatri Nivas and motels would enable the corporation to take up focused marketing, he added.

As part of improving wayside amenities for the tourists, the KTDC would augment the toilet facilities in the motel Araam's at Kannur, Kottarakara, Kayamkulam, Palakkad and Alappuzha. The work to augment toilet facilities would be taken up soon and would be completed by 2007.

    Training division

To train the personnel, especially those who come in direct contact with the guests at the various properties of the corporation, the KTDC has created a separate training division. The 700-odd personnel of the KTDC right from the manager to helpers would be trained in various aspects by experts. A library is also being planned in the corporate headquarters in the capital.

The corporation has registered a record operational profit of Rs.8 crore during 2006-2007 and the total turnover has crossed Rs.50 crore. Financial accountability has been established and accounts are being made up to date. Priority was given to settle annual accounts.
