Avenues for economic development and job generation

GUWAHATI: In a rare experiment of business tie-up between a corporate entity and a students' organisation, Sangavi Foods Private Limited, promoted by Nilon's Enterprises Private Ltd., on Wednesday signed a buyback agreement on contract farming with the Assam Unnati Sabha, an extension of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), to generate employment in the food processing sector in the State.

Under the agreement, Sangavi Foods will buy back fruits and vegetables like papaya, carrot, mango, and lemon grown by members of the Sabha in the State. AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya told reporters at the formal signing of the buyback agreement here that 25 members of the Sabha had already started papaya cultivation on 175 bighas of land at Barekuri in Tinsukia district, seeds and technical knowhow for which had been provided by the company on an assured buyback basis.

He said the initiative of contract farming with buyback assurances from corporate entities had taken by the AASU and the Assam Unnati Sabha to usher in economic development of Assam and generate employment avenues for youth of the State.

Nilon's Enterprise is a processed food company that manufactures pickles, chutney, papad, sauces, jams, vermicelli, preserves, instant mixes. It has seven manufacturing units, including the unit at Dalgaon in Darrang district. "This venture is just the beginning of a bigger vision of development. We need to create examples. It will not only help generate self employment but will also stop outflow of money from Assam as and when more manufacturing units for processed food like the one we have at Dalgaon come up,'' Managing Director of Nilon's Enterprises, Deepak Sanghavi, said.
