Getting it wrong
Special Correspondent
Bangalore:
The Halmidi inscription, dating back to the rule of the Kadamba kings, is the oldest record of the Kannada script. But according to the social science textbook for standard 5, the famous 16-line inscription dating back to 450 A.D. is from the time of the Satavahana rulers.
That is not all. The Kannada Geleyara Balaga says the textbook has several other factual inaccuracies. For instance, it refers to the famous iron pillar of Mehrauli as the "rusted pillar", while it has been a source of wonder for the scientific community because it has not rusted for 2,000 years.
The Kannada organisation has pointed out these glaring errors in a letter written to Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S. Horatti and demanded that the textbook be withdrawn. They have also demanded that action be taken against those responsible for the errors creeping into the text.
