THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government will seek the assistance of the Central Government to tackle the outbreak of dengue fever, chikungunya and other diseases in the State. More than 25,000 people had been hospitalised in the State with symptoms of chikungunya and dengue fever. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told presspersons after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that an all-party meeting would be convened on June 8 to discuss measures to tackle the situation. A cleanliness drive aimed at vector control would be launched on June 12. Ministers would oversee cleaning up of ponds and clearing of waterlogged areas in all the districts. The Chief Minister said that a meeting of social and community organisations would be convened on June 13 to discuss measures to be taken in the light of the Supreme Court directive on registration of marriages. This was to elicit their opinion on the implementation of the order as different communities had different customs and practices in respect of marriages. Mr. Achuthanandan said the Cabinet decided to rush assistance, including compensation and medicines, to people affected by sea erosion. He said the two surviving boys of the family of Johnson and Brijit who had died of electrocution along with their daughter at Anchuthengu in Thiruvananthapuram district recently would be given Rs.1 lakh each. Assistance of Rs.50,000 each would be provided to the next of kin of Abhilash of Chavara and Sivaraj of Punnapra who had died in accidents.
