BANGALORE:
Passers-by stopped in their tracks on Wednesday morning to see a giant cleaved into two. A magnificent rain tree opposite the defunct BRV cinema, whose splendid foliage stretches right across the road, presented an arresting sight as a huge branch, as big as a considerably sized tree itself, had crashed to the side. Luckily, it did not fall across the road, choosing instead the spacious police grounds. Had it fallen otherwise, it could have flattened a few cars and possible a few unfortunate humans too.
Motorists, used parking below its benevolent shade while waiting for the signal to change, paused to sigh over the power of a night's rainfall.
"The tree, Albizia richardiana, is fast-growing and more than 60 years old, and that is probably the reason that the branch fell off," said Krishna Udupudi, tree officer at the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
