Woman, paramour found dead

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Having lost all hope of getting united in their lifetime, a young married woman and her paramour allegedly ended their lives in a suicide pact at Bawana here on Wednesday. Both were found hanging from two ends of the same rope in a flat.

According to the police, 24-year-old Seema, mother of a five-year-old boy, and her 25-year-old neighbour Subhash, a widower, took the extreme step on Wednesday morning after having realised that their relationship would not stand social scrutiny.

"A one-page suicide note recovered from the spot said since they could not get united in their lifetime they had decided to unite in death. The note signed by both also mentioned their last wish -- not to perform autopsy on their bodies and cremate them together," said a police officer.

However, their last wishes could not be fulfilled as the woman was cremated at Nigambodh Ghat, while the last rites of the man were performed in his native village in Bawana. Post-mortem was also performed on their bodies to ascertain the cause of death.

Seema had married a Delhi Transport Corporation employee, a resident of neighbouring Khera Kalan village, six years ago. A few months ago she joined a private nursing home close to her parents' house and had come to stay with them. Her father works with a news agency. "Subhash's wife had committed suicide a year ago and his in-laws had filed a dowry case against him. He was released from jail only recently. Both Subhash and his father are also accused in a murder case and the latter is currently lodged in jail. Subhash had rented out his shops and this was his only source of income," the police said.

Though the woman's family denied any knowledge of the alleged affair, the police said investigations had revealed that the two had known each other for over a decade. But they belonged to different castes and there was opposition to their marriage.
