A different present — and a green message

Perhaps, the organisers thought that tiny tots can also give some tips to grown ups on World Environment Day, observed on Tuesday.

But it was the guests at the inaugural function of the "Ente Maram'' (My Tree) programme at the Elathoor CMC High School, Kozhikode, who were in for a surprise when schoolchildren, instead of offering bouquets, presented a sapling of a tree each to them.

Among the guests was Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, who inaugurated the function. The project, conceived jointly by the Department of Forest and Wildlife and the Department of Education, is aimed at increasing the biodiversity wealth of the State as well as creating awareness about the environment among schoolchildren. Nearly 2.5 lakh saplings are being distributed to 517 schools in Kozhikode district. Students of Class V to IX are taking part in the project. Seventeen types of saplings of trees including teak, mahogany, neem, mango and jackfruit will be given to the students to be planted in their homes.
