VS to open CWRDM laboratories

KOZHIKODE : Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the newly-developed state-of-the-art library, stable isotope and central water analysis laboratories at the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) at Kunnamangalam in Kozhikode on Sunday.

Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran will preside. The stable isotope laboratory is the sixth one of its kind in the country. It is being established with financial support of Rs.4 crore from the Department of Science and Technology of Government of India.

Eight academic institutions in the southern region are associated with this facility for research and training on water-related issues using isotopes as tracers. The facility is supported by most of the equipment required to find out the variation in the fundamental characteristics of water at the global and regional scale, which is vital in water resources development programmes.

The central laboratory has all the equipment needed for the estimation of pollutants of different classes like heavy metals, pesticide residues and those belonging to microbial groups.

The instruments established include atomic absorption spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, high pressure liquid chromatograph, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer and ion chromatograph.

The new library building of CWRDM, designed in Kerala style, has an area of 1500 sq.m. and a good collection of books on hydrology and water management. An e-library is also being established in the new building.
