An opportunity for tech-savvy kids

This is for kids who have big ideas and are in a hurry to grow up. Offering young technologically-savvy children a chance to create something that is lasting, IBM has launched "The Great Mind Challenge 2007".

This programme will let student tackle real problems. Besides getting a taste of the big bad world, they will have the opportunity to design and work on real projects within a deadline. On the completion of their projects they will be given a certificate by IBM.

"The Great Mind Challenge is an initiative by IBM's Academic Initiative, which a global model committed to drive evolving open standards-based IT skills. Under the initiative, IBM partners closely with stakeholders to create an enabling environment by allowing free access to IBM software, discounted hardware, course material, training and curriculum development, helping India become an innovators' nation," says Anil Menon, IBM India vice-president for marketing and software group systems.

While students will get exposed to the way things work in the outside world, they will also be mentored by professionals.

Given support by the IBM Academic Initiative, they will be able to solve their problems through virtual discussion forums, programme portal and e-mails. The programme is also a step forward for the IT industry. With students being able to handle projects that have a potential for marketing, companies will be able to find trained manpower to meet their growing demand.

There will be a separate job portal available for students who complete their projects, so that they can post their resumes online. But perhaps the biggest prize for the participants will be that the best 20 projects will be put on the Internet to be used. -- Staff Reporter
