VILLUPURAM : Inspector of Police Jawaharlal, attached to the Kottakuppam police station, suffered burn injuries while attempting to prevent the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres from burning an effigy of Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi at Thiruchitrambalam road junction in Vanur block near here on Thursday. Party leaders and cadres who had gathered at the spot tried to burn the effigy of the Chief Minister and copies of the Tamil daily Murasoli to protest against the article published against AIADMK leader.Jayalalithaa.Mr. Jawaharlal who reached the spot tried to remove the effigy. However, his trousers caught fire. His colleagues immediately rolled him on the road and extinguished the flames. However, he sustained burn injuries on the thighs and legs. He has been admitted to the JIPMER Hospital for treatment. Vanur MLA N.Ganapathi and 22 others were arrested. There were arrests at various places in Villupuram and Cuddalore districts. The police had a tough time, because more personnel had to be deployed at quite a number of places to maintain order.
