IN CUSTODY: AIADMK legislator A Anbalagan (in front) and Ohm Sakthi Sekar were among those arrested on Thursday for burning effigy of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Puducherry: Volunteers of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) here, including women, and party legislators A. Anbalagan and Ohm Sakthi Segar, courted arrest for burning copies of "Murasoli" and also an effigy of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Odiansalai junction here on Thursday. The agitation was staged to condemn the "derogatory" comments Mr. Karunanidhi had allegedly made against the AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa through the newspaper. 1,000 volunteers While Mr. Anbalagan said that more than 1,000 volunteers courted arrest, police sources said that around 500 participated in the stir, and they were taken into custody. They included presidium leader of the party M. Pandurangam, its joint secretaries A. Ravindran and A.M. Krishnamoorthy, trade union leader Pappusamy and municipal councillors belonging to the AIADMK. In a release Mr. Anbalagan said that the agitation was only a democratic mode of expressing the protests against the "no-holds-barred criticisms" of Mr. Karunanidhi had made against Jayalalithaa. He said that should the DMK leader persist in his criticism, the party would intensify the agitation. Police took all agitators to the barracks close to the port on Subbiah Salai. However, the arrested were let off later.
