PARIS: The legendary John McEnroe was honoured with the International Tennis Federation's highest accolade, the Philippe Chatrier Award, here on Tuesday. At the World Champions Dinner held at the Pavillon d'Armenonville, Switzerland's Roger Federer and Belgium's Justine Henin were also officially crowned 2006 World singles champions. McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, had been chosen by the ITF's board of directors to receive this year's award. The American, who also won Grand Slam doubles titles during his chequered career, was presented with the `gong' by the federation president Francesco Ricci Bitti. McEnroe, who still plays on the seniors' tour and is a well-respected TV commentator, had been inducted into the ITF Hall of Fame in 1999.
Henin absent
While Henin absented herself and sent an acceptance video, Roger Federer was there to join the party and receive his prize. The Bryan siblings, Bob and Mike were honoured as World doubles champions, while Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur got the equivalent women's award. Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands and Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova were chosen as junior world champions. De Bakker's compatriot, Esther Vergeer, collected the trophy for the best wheelchair women's champion for a record seventh year. The men's trphy went to Robin Ammerlaan, also of Holland. Agencies
