Clearance for canal modernisation in a week, says YSR

  • Chief Minister addresses public meet at Ganapavaram
  • 1,500 villages have no safe water, says MLA

  • IN PROTEST MODE: The candidates who passed the DSC-2006 exams protesting against delay in giving them postings at Ganapavaram on Thursday.

GANAPAVARAM (WEST GODAVARI DIST): Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy on Tuesday promised to provide safe drinking water to every delta village in West Godavari district in the next one year. Addressing a public meeting here, he said the Government would draw water from the Godavari and supply it to all delta villages through pipelines. The Chief Minister made this promise while responding to a plea by ruling party MLA Cherukuvada Sriranganadha Raju. Mr Raju brought to Dr Reddy's notice that 24 lakh people in over 1,500 villages falling under 13 Assembly constituencies in the delta region in the district were crying for protected drinking water. People here were forced to drink contaminated water, he added.

The Chief Minister said the State Government would accord administrative clearance for modernisation of Yanamadurru drain and Yarra Kalva within a week. Yarra Kalva and Yanamadurru drain were vulnerable to breaches during every rainy season, causing floods. He said the Government had proposed to modernise them with Rs 100 crores.

    Rytu yatra

Speaking at a Rytu Chaitanya Yatra at Jangareddygudem, Mr Reddy said the Government had decided to waive stamp duty on purchase of tractors each worth over Rs 4 lakhs by farmers. The Stamps and Registration Department is collecting 0.5 per cent of total cost towards stamp duty.

Ch. Harirama Jogaiah, Congress MP, said the Rs 2000-3000 crore delta modernisation project remained on paper. He sought the Chief Minister's intervention in the matter.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister's address was marked by protest by candidates who passed District Selection Committee-2006 examination and kept waiting for postings and the CPI(M) workers on the alleged irregularities in distribution of houses by official machinery to the poor.
