India loses out

New Delhi: India failed to reach the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympic qualifier under-23 football match after a 0-2 loss to Thailand at Bangkok on Wednesday.

Despite the win Thailand also failed to advance to the last-eight stage. North Korea and Iraq booked the quarterfinal berths from Asian group. Myanmar was the other team that failed to qualify.

Team manager Shanto Mitra said: "our team really played well. We had our chances but could not convert them."

"We really missed our regular goalkeeper Subroto Paul, who is injured and our main stopper N.S. Manju", said Mr. Mitra.

``I suggest special emphasis be given to age-group tournaments as they are our hope for the next Olympics,'' he added. — PTI
