KOCHI: All taluk hospitals would keep one ward for treating cases of suspected chikungunya. This was decided at a meeting on Thursday of the district Health authorities chaired by District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish. A ward had already been opened in Kothamangalam. The same system would be followed at the hospitals at Paravoor, Aluva, Perumbavoor, Tripunithura, Fort Kochi and Muvattupuzha. The Collector ordered all the panchayats, where the vector index was high, to use fogging machines to check the spread of the disease by controlling the population of mosquitoes. He also asked the Kudumbashree volunteers to participate in source reduction (removing the breeding places of mosquitoes) activity. Training would be imparted to the Kudumbashree members at the Collectorate on June 11. Residents association were also been called in to hold area-wise awareness programme on vector control. The District Medical Officer had been asked to ensure the availability of medicines. The panchayats were asked to keep aside 10 per cent of the grant for medicines.
Seven cases
On Thursday, seven suspected cases were reported from the district. Six cases were from Kuttampuzha and one from Pindimana. The viral fever reported across the district was 1,884 cases.
