Rajendran Congress candidate for bypoll

NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday decided to field K.S.K. Rajendran as candidate for the Madurai West Assembly byelection in Tamil Nadu to be held on June 26.

The byelection is necessitated on account of the death of S.V. Shanmugam of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam.

In the 2005 Assembly polls, the AIADMK candidate won the seat by over 3,000 votes. — Special Correspondent

Secretary

CHENNAI: S. Audiseshiah, IAS, Secretary, Public and Rehabilitation Department has been transferred and posted as Secretary, Public Works Department in the cadre post vice S. Rajarethinam, IAS, who is posted as Secretary to Chief Minister vice T.R. Ramasamy, IAS, granted leave. Mr. Audiseshiah shall hold full additional charge of the post of Secretary, Public and Rehabilitation Department until further orders. — Special Correspondent

Aid distributed

CHENNAI: A sum of Rs. 50,000 was distributed as educational assistance to office assistants working in the Government Pleader's office in the Madras High Court. R. Viduthalai, Advocate-General of Tamil Nadu, and Raja Kalifulla, Government Pleader, distributed the amount to the office assistants on Thursday. School-going wards of 25 office assistants would benefit by the gesture.

The amount was jointly contributed by the State Government law officers in the High Court to mark the 84th birthday of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, said Additional Government Pleader I. Paranthaman. — Special Correspondent.

CHENNAI: The Employees Provident Fund Organisation is conducting a training course for employers/ EPF members on July 9 and 10 through the zonal training institute (South Zone), Chennai.

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Coastal Security Group police on Thursday secured a wooden box, which could be used for packing a rocket shell.

Widespread rain in Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: Widespread rain on Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon in Nagapattinam, Mayiladuturai and Tarangampadi taluks brought cheer to farmers in the delta districts. It would enable farmers to prepare the land in the Vennar river division areas for cultivation of the kuruvai crop.

The rain also came as a relief to the people from the sweltering heat during the past one week. Agriculture department officials appealed to the farmers to prepare the land for raising the kuruvai paddy nurseries. — Staff Reporter
