Hisar: A local court on Thursday sentenced 14 persons to five years in prison for rioting and arson after a former Haryana MLA and seven members of his family were murdered here in September 2001. They were also ordered to pay fines of Rs.5,000 each while seven others were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Additional District and Sessions Judge Vimlesh Tanwar convicted Dharmpal, Kuldeep, Ramesh, Gulab, Baljit, Balwant, Virender (Litani), Jagan Nath, Rajender (Budha Khera), Ved Prakash (Rakhi Khas), Ranbir (Hasangarh), Balbir (Surewala), Jai Prakash (Prabhuwala) and Madan (Bithmara) guilty and awarded sentence under various sections of the IPC. Former MLA Relu Ram Punia, his wife Krishna, their daughter Priyanaka, son Sunil and his wife and their children were clubbed to death on the night of August 23, 2001. After the `rasam pagri' (purificatory rite) held at Punia's farmhouse on September 3, a group of angry people blocked Hisar-Chandigarh road, burnt a Haryana Roadways bus and the Surewala police post and damaged public properties. Several policemen were also injured in stone pelting by the mob.- PTI
