DHARWAD: Several schoolchildren took out a protest march and staged a dharna in Dharwad on Thursday protesting against the increase in bus pass fares.

Led by office-bearers of the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), the students began the protest march from Kadapa Maidan.

After passing through the streets of the city including Subhash Road, KSRTC Old Bus Stand, the children marched towards the Deputy Commissioner's office.

They raised slogans against the State Road Transport Corporation for increasing the bus pass fares and wanted this to be withdrawn with immediate effect.

After reaching the Deputy Commissioner's office, they staged dharna. Addressing the protesting students, AIDSO office-bearers said the State Road Transport Corporation had developed the habit of increasing bus pass fares annually.

The fares for primary and high school students had been increased from Rs. 410 to Rs. 520 and for college students from Rs. 760 to Rs. 920. While on one hand the State Government was extending the midday meal scheme to high school students, the corporation had taken a contrast decision to increase bus pass fares, they said.

`Revoke order'

They urged the State Government to take steps to revoke the order and reimburse the additional amount taken from students. A memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner was submitted.
