Flight services to the Gulf disrupted

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Flight services to and from the Gulf region through the Cochin International Airport remained disrupted for the second day running on Thursday owing to Gonu, the storm in Oman, and the subsequent closure of the airport in Muscat.

All the carriers operating in the Kochi-Muscat sector, including Air India Express, Indian and Oman Air, cancelled their services. The Muscat Airport had issued a "Notam" (Notice to airmen) stating that the airport would remain closed at least till Friday afternoon, airport sources said. However, there were unconfirmed reports that it might get further delayed.

Services of most of the airlines to various Gulf destinations from the Kochi airport operated well behind the original schedule. The Air India Express (AIE) cleared its backlog of services from Kochi to the Gulf region. AIE started operating stranded flights from Kochi by around 2 a.m. and cleared the entire backlog by 9 a.m.

Flight cancelled

PTI adds from Thiruvananthapuram: The Muscat-bound flight of Oman Airways from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was cancelled for the second day on Thursday due to the storm in Oman.

According to airport sources, passengers booked for the flight were accommodated in hotels.

Air India's Kochi-Trivandrum-Muscat, Sharjah-Trivandrum- Kozhikode flights were delayed.

Services to other Gulf destinations were also slightly delayed as the air space over Oman was closed, the sources said.
