ANANTAPUR: Foreign Direct Investment in higher education sector and allowing entry of foreign universities in the country will harm the sovereignty of the country, national council member of Students' Federation of India (SFI) K. Chandramohan said here on Wednesday. Speaking at the concluding session of the four-day training classes for members of the student outfit on education and science, he said against the recommendation of setting up 1,700 universities in the country, the Centre was allowing foreign universities and foreign direct investment in higher education sector. State Government's recent memorandum of understanding with Georgia Tech University was in tune with the Centre's policy, he pointed out. Policies of successive Governments at the Centre and in the State had already taken higher education beyond the reach of the poor and the entry of foreign university would make it further difficult for them, he noted. He alleged that the State Government had already parted valuable land to foreign universities in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.
