Bangalore: The State Bank of India on Thursday launched Vidya Dhana, a loan scheme exclusively for students selected for engineering and management courses in colleges affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). The scheme is targeted at students entering the 121 VTU-affiliated colleges. Students can make use of this scheme through a single-window procedure by visiting any of the 330 SBI branches in the State or anywhere else in India. The Resource Centre of the bank in Hubli will coordinate with the students, colleges and processing centres. The bank will make the fee payment to the college concerned on behalf of the student. A kit that explains all the details regarding the loan has already been distributed among 40,000 students awaiting CET counselling. Speaking at the launch of the scheme, Mahpara Ali, Chief General Manager of the SBI, said that while keeping up with changing economic trends, the bank had not given up its role in nation building. The Vidya Dhana scheme, she said, was designed to ensure that "no eligible student is deprived of education for non-availability of financial assistance". K. Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of VTU, said the university earlier launched a loan scheme for postgraduate students in collaboration with State Bank of Mysore.
For others
The new scheme, which would be for fresh entrants to courses this year, would later be extended to other students, he said.
