ESCOMS seek tariff revision

S. Rajendran

Bangalore: The five electricity supply companies (ESCOMS) in the State, which are in the grip of a financial crunch, have moved the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) for a revision in tariffs.

Sources in the Government said here that the five companies had sought an across-the-board increase of 90 paise a unit. Tariff revision had not been sought for power supplied to irrigation pumpsets and the Bhagya Jyothi and Kuteera Jyothi schemes.

Tariffs were last revised nearly two years ago. The orders of the KERC relating to tariff revision issued last year have been challenged by the ESCOMS before the Appellate Electricity Tribunal.

The revenue gap has been widening, and it is presently estimated at Rs. 3,500 crore. Government subsidy for electricity supplied to certain beneficiaries has remained static at around Rs. 1,800 crore annually.

Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. is also stated to have filed an application before the KERC seeking a hike in wheeling charges — cost paid by the ESCOMS for transmission of electricity from the generating stations to the local grid.

The ESCOMS held a meeting on the revenue gap with senior officials of the Government a few days ago.

The Government directed the ESCOMS to file a tariff review requisition before the KERC.

Revised tariffs are valid for three years.
