Special Correspondent

The idea is to meet requirement of a population of 53 lakhs

BHUBANESWAR: The draft proposal of the perspective plan for overall development of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack was submitted to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat here on Thursday.

The draft of the `Perspective Plan Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Urban Complex Vision-2030' has been prepared by Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur as per a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the State Government and the institution in 2004.

The papers, which were presented to Mr. Patnaik by Biplabkanti Sengupta of IIT Kharagpur, lays stress on integrated development of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack starting from Khurda on one side to Chaudwar on the other.

The perspective plan is being drawn up to meet the requirement of a population of 50 lakhs. The plan aims for planned, scientific and humane development of the State Capital Region giving priority to development of road communication, proper environment management, development of tourism infrastructure and conservation of ancient monuments in the two cities.

The Chief Minister suggested that while finalising the plan, care should be taken to ensure provision of better services to those belonging to the lower income groups.

According to State Urban Development Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, the IIT experts have given three weeks time to the State government to give its comments on the draft proposal.

Once the State government returns the proposals with its comments, IIT Kharagpur would take another three to four weeks time to give a final shape to the perspective plan, Mr. Singh Deo said.
