BANGALORE: Hailing the Garden City's achievement in information technology and biotechnology sectors, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday urged Bangalore to work towards becoming the country's true knowledge capital where the knowledge as well as knowledge workers were held in high esteem. Inaugurating the Bangalore Bio-2007, Mr. Chidambaram stressed the need for creating an "enabled environment" in the country where the knowledge workers such as scholars, scientists, teachers and researchers were respected. Such an environment was necessary to retain the country's talented human resources and also wean them back from abroad, he said. Though the States may spend on primary and secondary education, real breakthroughs were achieved by persons who had access to higher education and had the opportunity to conduct research, he observed. "For a society, nothing is more important than knowledge. Nothing is important than building India as knowledge society," the Minister remarked.
