Communist leaders meet Karunanidhi

S. Dorairaj

Discussed issues related to the political situation in the State

CHENNAI: Leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India called on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi separately and discussed issues related to the political situation in the State, besides highlighting certain issues affecting the people.

State CPI (M) secretary N. Varadarajan, who along with central committee member of the party T.K. Rengarajan met Mr. Karunanidhi, told The Hindu that they had asked the Government to take stern action against persons responsible for the recent violence in Vilampatti village at Nilakottai taluk in Dindigul district.

The CPI (M) leaders said that though the Government had announced some relief to the affected people in the village, about 90 persons were still in prison and arrest warrants had been issued against 60 others.

They also urged the State Government to attend to the socio-economic demands of Arunthathiars who were the worst affected among the dalits, Mr.Varadarajan said. They had brought to the notice of the Chief Minister the plight of Arunthathiars, who had been carrying out jobs such as manual scavenging and taking bodies to crematoria. Several of them had lost their lives due to asphyxiation while cleaning the sewerage in cities and towns. The Arunthathiars would hold a rally in Chennai on June 12 and submit a memorandum to Chief Minister highlighting their demands, Mr.Varadarajan said.

The CPI (M) leaders flayed certain remarks of general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa close on the heels of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority serving a demolition notice on her party headquarters. They stressed the need for the Government to steer clear of the AIADMK leader's "diversionary tactics."

State CPI secretary D.Pandian and assistant secretary C.Mahendran, who called on the Chief Minister, sought his intervention to ensure the safe return of Tamil workers detained in Malaysia.

Mr. Mahendran said around 20,000 persons belonging to the State had been detained in eight camps of Malaysia on the ground of not possessing passports and travel documents. These workers had gone to Malaysia seeking jobs. Contrary to the assurances given by agents who had sent them, the company managements ill-treated them. They also destroyed the passports of many Tamil workers, who were dubbed illegal immigrants, he pointed out.
