Teachers' issues: State seeks Centre's help

Special Correspondent

Move to speed up transfers and promotions

D. Rajanarasimha

NEW DELHI: The Andhra Pradesh Government on Thursday urged the Centre to intervene and come to the aid of 2.5 lakh teachers working in the Mandal and Zila Parishad schools and give them parity with teachers working in Government schools.

Urging the Centre to expedite the issuance of an amendment to the Presidential Order, the State Government said by doing so it would be in a position to speed up the issue of transfers, promotions and fill up vacancies in the sector.

Leading a delegation, D. Rajanarasimha, Minister for School Education, met the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil with regard to integrated services for teachers in the State for which Presidential consent was required.

Patient hearing

Briefing correspondents, the Minister said the Home Minister gave the delegation a patient hearing and promised to look into the issue.

He said as for fresh recruitment the Government was ready with merit list on the basis of the Departmental Selection Committee test-2006, but would await the order of the Supreme Court expected in the third week of September as also the State Government's move to appeal in the High Court against the Tribunal's order in B.Ed/D.Ed case. "We would like to do justice for all, why 1/3 or 2/3. Let us wait for another two months," the Minister said.

Earlier, B. Mohan Reddy and Srinivasulu Naidu, MLCs, had submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister and Union Law Minister on the issue.

Mr. Reddy said that as against 20,000 teachers working in Government schools, there were 2.5 lakh teachers in Mandal/Zilla Parishads without any promotion channels.
