MANGALORE: Although education for girls in government high schools is supposed to be provided free, fees are being collected in several schools, the Federation of Education Resource Centres has said. It adds that the district administration should rectify this situation immediately.
Suggestion
The federation has suggested in a press release here that by displaying boards prominently in front of schools and through a sustained media campaign, people could be made aware that education for girls should be free in government high schools. This issue was one of many that came up for discussion at the working committee meeting of the federation held at the Belthangady Taluk Panchayat recently. Some of the other issues that came up included the provision of quality education by strengthening the School Development Monitoring Committees (SDMCs), strengthening the committees set up in villages to prevent the trafficking of women and children, and conducting programmes to spread awareness about the importance of primary education. The federation has also said that the authorities should not be hasty in declaring the district "child labour-free".
Regret
The federation has expressed regret that it has not received any reactions from district authorities on the demands put forth by the people as part of the "Masotsava" on child rights last year.
