Heavy vehicles banned on highway

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao has banned the movement of bullet tankers transporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), tankers carrying petroleum products, and trucks transporting timber and granite between Gundya and Sakaleshpur on National Highway 48 (from Mangalore to Hassan) between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. from June 10 to September 30.

The Deputy Commissioner issued a notification to this effect on June 6. The ban has been imposed to prevent any blocking of the highway during the rainy season on the Shiradi Ghat section.

He convened a meeting to discuss road safety issues at his office on June 4. The meeting discussed at length accidents taking place on national highways. The participants observed that the Shiradi Ghat section on National Highway 48 usually got blocked during the monsoon owing to accidents involving heavy vehicles. They said, therefore, that there was a need to ban their movement between Gundya in Dakshina Kannda and Sakleshpur.

Mr. Rao, in the notification, has directed the Regional Transport Offices at Mangalore and Puttur to take steps to implement his order. Police have been authorised to co-ordinate with the departments concerned in this effort.
