MANGALORE: Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (MESCOM) has started creating an electronic database of its physical assets in a phased manner. The company has entrusted the work to Speck Systems Limited, Hyderabad which is using Geographical Information System, in the task. It has already started consumer survey for the purpose.

Main objective

Informed sources in MESCOM told The Hindu here on Thursday that the main objective of the exercise was to know precisely about the location of each customer.

In the present system, whenever there is a complaint, MESCOM line staff struggle to locate the consumer through meter number and other particulars that result in delays in repair and restoration of power, the sources said.

Possibilities

Once the database is ready, the line staff and senior executives can easily locate the customer, know the exact cause of power failure, speed up corrective action and even provide stand by power. The database will provide personal details of the consumers and technical information related to faulty line.

Speck Systems has started collecting data on MESCOM's network in the city. It will soon be collecting the information from individual households in Mangalore.

The entire survey work is expected to be completed by the end of September. The exercise will be started in Shimoga, Bhadravathi, Chikmagalur and Sagar from October, sources in MESCOM said.

MESCOM has around 2.31 lakh consumers in Mangalore and Udupi and 1.79 lakh in Shimoga, Bhadravathi, Chikmagalur and Sagar, the sources said.
