This Day That Age
Mr. Ajit Prasad Jain, Union Food Minister, warned millers and large producers that the Government would not hesitate to take action under the Anti-Hoarding Act, if the existing high prices of rice and paddy did not show a downward trend. Mr. Jain, who was talking to pressmen in Vijayawada on June 7, said that all talk of scarcity of rice in Andhra was utter nonsense. He expected the prices to gradually come down in Andhra, and hoped the producers and millers would cooperate with the Government in their task of making rice available to the public at reasonable prices. He, however, warned them that the Government would not hesitate to enforce zonal restrictions if the hoarding tendency on the part of farmers and traders for higher prices continued. Mr. Jain, who was accompanied by Mr. M.V. Krishnappa, Union Deputy Food Minister, and Mr. P. Thimma Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister, held discussions with the producers, millers and the revenue and Railway officials regarding the stock of rice, its prices and movement by rail.
