Special Correspondent
Puducherry: The administration has raised the cash award given to eminent scholars from Rs.20,000 to Rs.30,000 under the award schemes, "Tamil Maamani", "Telugu Ratna" and "Malayala Ratna", instituted by the Department of Art and Culture. The gold medal presented under each of the three awards would weigh 24 grams instead of 16 grams from now. An official release said here on Friday that the awards were presented every year since 1998 to recognise eminent scholars of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages here. The administration has also increased the number of awards in each category. Now, four persons will be presented the "Tamil Maamani" award, two scholars the "Telugu Ratna" and two the "Malayala Ratna". The number of "Ilaignar Maamani" awards to the young artists had been raised to six to cover one artist each under the categories of "literature, music, dance, drama, painting and sculpture and folk arts".
