Mobile unit for tax collection at doorstep

Oulgaret Municipality to launch facility in July

PUDUCHERRY: After making substantial progress in property tax collection through a tie-up with nationalised banks, the Oulgaret Municipality is now all set to launch a mobile van for collecting tax at the doorstep in its 21 wards.

The mobile van, under modification at the yards of a private company in Villupuram, will hit the roads by beginning of next month.

"The fully-furnished mobile van, having a computer and a printer, will be introduced for collecting property tax in July.

"We plan to utilise the mobile van wherever there is a deficiency in collection," T. Diagarajan, Commissioner of Oulgaret Municipality told The Hindu .

People will be informed in advance about the visit of the mobile van. The announcement will be made either through public address system or through door-to-door delivery of pamphlets, he informed.

Earlier, the municipality had tied up with nationalised banks for collecting tax through its branches and opened computerised tax collection centres.

The venture had helped to increase the tax collection by about 25 per cent, according to the Commissioner.

Out of the total target of Rs 1.75 crore set for the current financial year, the civic body had collected about Rs. 80 lakh till last month.

"We expect to reach the target much before the closure of the financial year," he added.

The earning for the municipality from property tax collection during the previous years used to be between Rs.20 to Rs.30 lakh, he said.

He also said that the process was on to issue demand notices to the residents of Kalapet for payment of tax.
