Corrections and Clarifications

  • The first sentence in the penultimate paragraph in an article "Overplaying the Savonarola card" (Editorial page, June 7, 2007) was: "The second infirmity endangered by this culture of suspicion is a vastly disproportionate voice and veto for the judicial officers in our collective affairs." A reader points out that "endangered" should have been "engendered".

  • A report "India is committed to clean environment, says [External Affairs Minister] Pranab [Mukherjee]" (June 6, 2007) stated that the E.K. Janaki Ammal National Award for Taxonomy for 2006 has been conferred on N.P. Balakrishnan for Animal and on Professor Veena Tandon for Plant Taxonomy. It was an error. The Janaki Ammal National Award on Plant Taxonomy for the year 2006 has gone to Dr. N.P. Balakrishnan and the Janaki Ammal National Award on Animal Taxonomy for the year 2006 to Prof. (Mrs.) Veena Tandon. (The Ministry of Environment and Forests has instituted this national award named after the late Prof. E.K. Janaki Ammal, an Indian scientist and botanist of international repute.)

  • The caption of the accompanying AFP photograph in a report "[Carlos] Moya pleased with resurgence" ("Sport", June 8, 2007) was: "Star Cast: Actor Antonio Banderas, who watched the semifinal featuring fellow Spaniards Moya and Nadal, snapped with the two at Roland Garros on Wednesday." It should have been "quarterfinal".
