NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government will soon start laying sewer lines in the Capital's rural areas to create hygienic conditions there. This was announced by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit following a high-level meeting that was also attended by Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan. The Chief Minister said sewer lines would be laid in 30 villages where trunk sewer lines exist nearby. "There will be no need for acquisition of any land for commissioning of sewer lines in these villages,'' she said, adding that "there would also be no difficulty in laying sewer lines in another 49 villages as trunk sewer lines are passing at a reasonable distance from these villages.'' However, it was pointed out that land would have to be acquired for commissioning of ponds and mini sewer treatment plants for the rest of the villages. Ms. Dikshit has directed the Divisional Commissioner's Office and the Delhi Jal Board to speed up the matter relating to acquisition of land. She assured that there would be no dearth of funds for this project. "As far as possible, it would be ensured that all 189 rural villages that have been lagging in development of civic amenities are brought at par with facilities being provided in various colonies of the Capital,'' she said, expressing confidence that this would bring about a change in the living standards.
