NEW DELHI: With the entire North India reeling under a heat wave, several States have begun overdrawing power from the Northern Grid to meet their demand. On Friday when the temperature rose to 43 degree Celsius in Delhi, the city was overdrawing more than 200 MW of power. The peak load on the system was recorded at 3,891 MW at 5 p.m. with 6 MW of load shedding by BSES due to over loading of Okhla Phase-II 20 MVA Transformer. Power Department officials said that maximum shedding of 56 MW was carried out due to under-frequency for 15 minutes at the 220 KV Okhla Grid. With two units of Singrauli Thermal Power Station broken down, the city did not get the 60 MW of power that it is entitled to from the plant. The city also faced a shortage on account of forced outages at some of its units. "There was less generation, which necessitated rotational load shedding to restrict over-drawal. Also, when the frequency of the Northern Grid dips below 49.5 Hz, load shedding is done to save the grid from collapsing," a Power Department official said. Delhi generated 1,234 MW of power on Friday with the Badarpur Thermal Power Plant providing 624 MW, Gas Turbine 163 MW, Indraprastha 110 MW and Pragati and Rajghat generating 283 MW and 60 MW, respectively. Many parts of the Capital experienced power cuts through the day and officials said there could be more load shedding in the evening to stave off a grid collapse. Residents of South Delhi, South West Delhi and East Delhi complained of power cuts ranging from one to two hours. With the weatherman forecasting that the maximum temperature would hover around 44 degrees Celsius, the Power Department officials said the demand for electricity was likely to rise further.
