Alappuzha
Staff Reporter
ALAPPUZHA: A controversy is slowly taking shape over the Nehru Trophy Boat Race that will be held in Alappuzha in August this year. A general body meeting of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society that met here was dismissed without much being discussed after a controversy over the accounts of the event's 2005 and 2006 editions arose. Accounts for both the years are yet to be submitted. Amidst this, a sponsorship payment row between a prominent Malayalam television channel and the society is still in court. Society chairman and district Collector V.K. Balakrishnan, addressing the media after the general body meeting, which was preceded by the Society's executive committee meet, said a sub-committee had been constituted since a few `clarifications' were needed over the accounts of 2005 and 2006. The sub-committee had been asked to submit the accounts within 10 days after which the general body would again be convened on June 18 to finalise the event's details.
Sponsorship woes
Regarding the row between the Society and the channel, which was given telecast and sponsorship rights, the Collector said he would examine the issue and an appropriate decision would be taken considering the court's decision too. It is learnt that the channel, which won the telecast rights through tender, had paid only around Rs.10 lakhs of the Rs.21 lakhs it had quoted. The Society had approached the court over the delay in payment.
